ABSTRACT

Background: Scheduled maintenance appointments after periodontal treatment are very much critical for the success of the treatment. This is necessary for patients seeking to prevent disease recurrence and maintain oral health. Materials and Methods: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis to assess the efficacy of various maintenance intervals in preventing disease recurrence among patients with a history of periodontal treatment. We gathered data from a diverse group of patients who had undergone periodontal treatment and tracked their oral health over an extended period. Results: Our findings reveal compelling insights into the optimal maintenance intervals. Patients who attended maintenance appointments at three-month intervals showed a significant reduction in disease recurrence by 40%, compared to those at six-month intervals. Moreover, those on annual intervals experienced a disease recurrence rate of 60. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study underscores the importance of regular maintenance appointments after periodontal treatment. Patients who attend appointments every three months have a significantly lower risk of disease recurrence. These findings emphasize the need for tailored maintenance schedules to ensure long-term oral health.

ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic periodontitis is a prevalent oral health issue, affecting a substantial portion of the population. Infrabony defects, characterized by bone loss around teeth, are a hallmark of this condition and require surgical intervention to prevent further damage and tooth loss. Two commonly used surgical approaches are open flap debridement (OFD) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study included 60 patients with chronic periodontitis and infrabony defects. Patients were randomly assigned to either the OFD or GTR group. Clinical parameters, including probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL), were recorded at baseline and at 6-month and 12-month follow-up appointments. Radiographic assessments were conducted using periapical radiographs. The primary outcome measures were changes in PD and CAL, while secondary outcomes included radiographic evidence of bone regeneration. Results: At the 6-month follow-up, the OFD group demonstrated an average reduction in PD of 2.4 mm (SD = 0.8) and an increase in CAL of 1.6 mm (SD = 0.5). In contrast, the GTR group showed a reduction in PD of 2.1 mm (SD = 0.7) and an increase in CAL of 1.9 mm (SD = 0.6). These differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Radiographic analysis indicated a mean bone fill of 1.2 mm (SD = 0.4) in the OFD group and 1.4 mm (SD = 0.3) in the GTR group at 12 months, with no significant difference observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, both OFD and GTR approaches demonstrated comparable clinical and radiographic outcomes in the treatment of infrabony defects in chronic periodontitis patients.

ABSTRACT

Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, universities worldwide pivoted to distance education, primarily online, using various blended learning tools. In the contemporary era, characterized by widespread high-speed internet and the ubiquity of social media (SM), SM has become an essential tool, especially among students. This study aimed to assess the perception, impact, and preferences of various SM platforms for learning among health sciences students in the post-COVID-19 era. Methodology The study was conducted at constituent colleges of Jouf University and Northern Border University between January and June 2022. Responses from 560 students were assessed using a self-administered, pre-validated questionnaire comprising 31 questions. These questions addressed students' perceptions, preferences, and learning modes derived from SM. Descriptive and inferential statistics evaluated the influence of SM on student learning. Results On average, students spent 3.18 hours daily on SM. YouTube (41.1%) and Instagram (37.1%) emerged as the most preferred platforms for learning. A significant 86.4% of students utilized SM for accessing subject-related texts and watching related videos. Moreover, 78.6% believed that SM platforms enhanced their subject knowledge following lectures. Logistic regression analysis indicated maximum learning benefits for students who used SM between two to three hours daily. Conclusion Social media platforms, when used judiciously, can enhance the learning experience for health sciences students in the post-COVID era. While offering opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills, care must be taken to prevent misuse, abuse, or related health hazards.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: In preparation of a definitive randomized clinical trial (RCT), the current parallel-grouped triple-blind pilot RCT assessed the efficacy of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) with polylactic acid/polyglycolic acid (PLA/PGA) membrane for improvement of periodontal tissue regeneration in Class II furcation type defects. METHOD AND MATERIALS: With the present single-center investigation, 24 patients/24 mandibular molars revealing Class II furcation lesions with involved buccal surfaces were randomly allocated and treated surgically, using either a PLA/PGA membrane alone (control, n = 12) or in combination with rhBMP-2 (n = 12). Assessors, participants, and the statistician were blinded to the treatment groups. Clinical parameters including Plaque Index (PI), Papillary Bleeding Index (PBI), clinical attachment level, vertical probing depth, horizontal probing depth, and gingival recession were assessed at baseline and 6 months postsurgery. RESULTS: Baseline values concerning the investigated parameters were comparable between both groups (P > .05). After 6 months, clinical attachment level gain was similar (P = .76), while greater reductions in vertical probing depth (P = .01) and horizontal probing depth (P = .05), along with less gingival recession (P = .03) were observed in the PLA/PGA + rhBMP-2 group (compared to the controls). An increased number of completely closed furcation type defects was observed in the PLA/PGA + rhBMP-2 group (with no adverse effects). CONCLUSIONS: When treating Class II furcation lesions, the use of rhBMP-2 (combined with PLA/PGA membranes) seems advantageous. The presented set-up seems feasible with regards to recruitment, randomization, acceptance, retention, and adherence to the study protocol. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess the development of halitosis in participants wearing new removable complete dentures (RCD). METHOD AND MATERIALS: Seventy-five completely edentulous patients receiving RCD were recruited. Halitosis was assessed by means of FitScan Breath Checker on the day of denture insertion (T0), as well as after 1 month (T1), and after 2 months (T2). Risk factors were studied using a validated questionnaire about oral and denture hygiene, and tongue scoring followed for each participant. A modified plaque scoring technique assessed the percentage of newly formed biofilms accumulated on all surfaces of the RCD. RESULTS: At T0, 44% of the participants revealed halitosis. This percentage insignificantly increased at T1 (66.7%) and T2 (65.6%), respectively (P > .109). At T1, halitosis was significantly lower among persons who reported tongue brushing compared to refraining participants (14.3% vs 72.6%; P = .002). At T2, halitosis was significantly higher among patients suffering from moderate to heavy tongue coatings compared to those with no or only light coatings (83.3% vs 50.0%; P = .006), those who did wear their dentures during sleeping (77.5% vs 45.8%; P = .010), and those who did not brush their tongues at all (87.5% vs 29.2%; P < .0001). With a 16-fold increased probability (95% CI 10.0 to 23.31; P < .001), the multivariate analysis revealed that non-brushing the tongue was the only variable significantly linked to halitosis at both follow-ups. CONCLUSION: Non-brushing of tongues as well as sleeping with dentures seems to be the main causes of halitosis in new RCD wearers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of reusing nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy wires after 6 weeks of intraoral use by evaluating the changes in the load-deflection properties and surface characterization of these alloy wires after cold sterilization by immersion in 2% of acidic glutaraldehyde for 10 h. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty wires each in three groups of G1-as-received wires (ARW), G2-unsterilized used wires, and G3-sterilized used wires (SUW) were tested by the three-point bending test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were subjected to statistics, one-way analysis of variance, and Bonferroni posthoc test for comparison. RESULTS: Recycling of NiTi wires produced statistically insignificant changes in both the loading and unloading properties of the wires. The forces needed to twist the used wires, that is, G2-(UUW) and G3-(SUW) were lower than G1-(ARW), suggesting lowering of the stiffness of the wires. Superelasticity is well-maintained by G2-(UUW) and G3-(SUW) although there is an insignificant lowering of the forces exerted by them during loading and unloading. SEM demonstrated no increase in the pitting of surfaces in both G2-(UUW) and G3-(SUW); multiple areas were seen to be more smoothened over G2-(UUW) and G3-(SUW) NiTi wires surfaces. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study support the reuse of NiTi wires after 6 weeks of use in oral conditions followed by cold sterilization by immersion in 2% acidic glutaraldehyde for 10 h.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To noninvasively determine the relationship between the thickness of the buccal bone and attached gingiva of the maxillary premolars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 128 maxillary premolars in 32 patients were assessed for measurement of buccal bone thickness and corresponding attached gingival thickness at 3 mm apical to cemento-enamel junction. Buccal bone thickness was measured on cone-beam computed tomography scans and attached gingival thickness by ultrasound unit. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to assess the correlation between buccal bone and attached gingival thickness at each tooth type. RESULTS: The mean buccal bone thickness at the maxillary premolars was 1.07 mm. The 1st premolars had a buccal bone thickness < 1 mm at 68% of all sites, and the 2nd premolars had a buccal bone thickness of 1.0-2.0 mm at 32% of all sites. The 1st premolars had a gingival thickness > 1.2 mm at 55% of all sites, and the 2nd premolars had a gingival thickness of 1.1-1.3 mm at 45% of all sites. The correlation between buccal bone and attached gingival thickness was moderately positive (r = 0.406; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between buccal bone thickness and gingival thickness is independent of each other in the maxillary right first premolar, whereas a moderate correlation with a dependent relation exists in the maxillary right second premolar, maxillary left first premolar, and maxillary left second premolar. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Soft tissue and hard tissue associated with volumetric changes in maxillary premolar region can be unfavorable for both aesthetic and implant placement. In fact this study highlighted the relationship between the thickness of attached gingiva and corresponding buccal bone in maxillary premolar region so to enable for proper planning of implant therapy following extraction.
